Steve Bruce claims he will pull out all the stops to ensure Wigan retain the services of Antonio Valencia.
The Ecuador international winger is on loan at Wigan from Villarreal and he has made a real impression on Bruce.
"Valencia has done extremely well," said Bruce. "I am going to make sure I do everything I can to make this a permanent signing."
Bruce has also revealed that he has informed Austrian Paul Scharner that he will get the chance to claim a regular spot as a centre back.
"I tried to sign Scharner when I was at Birmingham as a centre back," said Bruce. "That is his position, in my view, and players have got to do it my way.
"I watched him play there for his country and I also saw him in Bergen. I was disappointed when I missed out on him but, credit to Wigan, Dave Whelan came up with the cash and they nicked him."
