Sir Trevor Brooking says England U21 coach Stuart Pearce isn't in the running for the senior job.

Fabio Capello will leave his England post after Euro 2012 and the FA have said an Englishman will succeed Capello.

Brooking said: "Stuart knows he is not the automatic person. He came out of club management and did really well with the Under 21s but some would say he needs to go back to club management.

"Let's see what happens in the next couple of season. 'We've indicated we'd like to go English but it's a question of who is available at the time. People have thrown various names in the hat, the more experienced English managers.

"At times it's been an older person's position but we need to see where they are with their clubs at the time."
