Bristol Rovers name McGhee as new boss

Mark McGhee is the new manager of League Two strugglers Bristol Rovers. The 54-year-old has been out of management since leaving Aberdeen in December 2010.

McGhee, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, takes charge of a Pirates side that is currently 18th in the table.

Chairman Nick Higgs said: "We are delighted to bring Mark to the club.

"We were very impressed with the quality of candidates for the position, but he was a cut above, he interviewed extremely well, and has a fantastic pedigree.

"Mark has a great track record, and has managed at the highest level in this country and in Scotland.

"His approach is very professional and he impressed us with his plans to take Rovers forward and get the club up where it belongs.

"We are all now looking forward to the rest of the season with Mark in charge."

McGhee stressed that Rovers fans should be expecting much more from their side - and anticipates happier times in months and years to come.

"Over time the minimum they should expect is not to be in this division," he said. "Even in their present form they should consider themselves capable of being in at least the First Division.

"Beyond that the coming of a new stadium will hopefully bring even greater times. That's a part of why I'm here - I see a project, it's not just a case of me coming here and fire-fighting. There's a future here.

"There's a really exciting future possibly for the club and I'm delighted to be a part of it."
