Brisbane Roar defender Luke DeVere has stated that the Premier’s Plate is this season’s priority for the club.
The A-League leaders are cruising along with just one loss in 21 matches so far this season and seemingly have a stranglehold on the top position on the league table.
Australian football is unlike Europe where teams who finish the season on top of the table win the championship but DeVere feels that the minor premiership is more important as it rewards a team for a full season of performances.
"I'd prefer to win the Premier's Plate (than the Grand Final)," DeVere told the Courier-Mail.
"Obviously finals are a big part of Australian sport, but winning the premiership by finishing first on the ladder is the true indication of how a team's gone during the season, rather than having to be judged on how you perform in a knockout finals series."
And DeVere said that getting points from clashes with the second and third-placed teams will go a long way to helping the Roar achieve that goal.
“Gold Coast (3rd) and Adelaide (2nd) have been doing well - they're the closest teams to us," he added.
"If we can get good results against them, we'll go a long way towards winning the Premier's Plate."
