Brighton working hard to extend loan of Newcastle keeper Harper

Brighton boss Gus Poyet is urging Newcastle to extend goalkeeper Steve Harper's loan spell to the end of January.

The initial agreement was for a month and, although Poyet thought he was getting Harper for longer at the time, he is keen to keep the veteran down at the south coast.

Poyet said: "The idea in the beginning was it would be up to January. For some reason, in the last few hours of negotiations, it changed to only a month.

"I don't like a month because players get used to how you play then go back, so I was as surprised as anyone. I was convinced it was for almost three months. It's very difficult to explain the reasons but it happened.

"We want the players to be happy here."
