Brentford defender Pim Balkestein accused beaten Carling Cup opponents Everton of being too cocky for their own good.
Dutch defender Balkestein, who wears a face mask to protect an injury, reckons the Toffees were lacking passion.
He said: "I think they came here and thought 'we're going to roll them'.
"Maybe their manager said 'come on, it's a difficult game' but they will always play differently against us than against Manchester United."
Balkestein now wants to wear his mask as a good luck charm.
He added: "I have played two good games with it now so maybe it is lucky."
