Brazil’s Santos defeated by New York Red Bulls
Brazilian club Santos were defeated 3-1 by New York Red Bulls at the opening of the MLS club’s new stadium , Red Bull Arena.
The Red Bulls triumphed on debut at their new venue in front of a sell-out crowd of 25,000 thanks to first half goals from new recruit Joel Lindpere, defender Mike Petke and Jamaica international Dane Richards.
Petke said it was a great night for the club and was hoping they could take their pre-season form into the 2010 MLS season which kicks off next weekend.
“Tonight was a special night, however the season starts next week,” Petke said. “That’s going to be a special night as well. We’ve made it clear that we have no excuses now.”
Coach Hans Backe said it was important for his side to win even though it was only a friendly game.
“Even friendly games are important games, in a way they are big games when you start off like this,” Red Bulls Backe said. “Hopefully with the injuries this game we can get one or two players back for the Chicago game because I would say we have a rather decent first 11 that could compete with most of the teams in this league.”
The Red Bulls will now prepare for their first kick against Chicago Fire at Red Bull Arena this Saturday, March 27.

It was Santos B team... except Neymar, who was bound to play because of contract.
Santos main team played this sunday for the São Paulo state league, and won 9-1.
