Bournemouth signing Jermain Defoe: Spurs return was unrealistic

Bournemouth signing Jermain Defoe admits he couldn't consider a return to Tottenham this summer.

Defoe left Sunderland after taking up a clause in his contract saying he could leave if they were relegated. He had several offers before opting for Bournemouth. Even his old club Spurs were reportedly interested.

He said: “I loved that club and I had a special relationship with the fans there and scored a lot of goals, but the situation here (at Bournemouth) is unique, starting here, knowing most of the people here.

“You talk about being realistic, I don't think Tottenham need too much more now from where they were last season, so close to winning the league. I really don't think they need too much.

“But when i got the phone call (from Bournemouth) I didn't want to know about any other clubs. I just said 'get this done, this is where I want to be.' As mum said 'this was the special one. The people there appreciated you'. It was brilliant advice."
