Bournemouth midfielder Andrew Surman says quitting Southampton was tough.
Surman, 29, will face his former club in tomorrow's first ever Premier League derby between the south coast neighbours.
"It was disappointing to leave but I was leaving to join a Premier League club.
"I had to look out for my own career. It was a natural progression in football. It is never nice to be part of a relegated team and it was tough to swallow.
"At the time I left there were worries about paying the players.
"You could feel the negativity around the place. As much as you want to concentrate on the games, it filtered through to the players and staff.
"It'll be extra special to go back and play there - I supported them and my family still do. The club played massive part in career, they gave me my chance and I owe them a lot.
"I am really looking forward to this match because I've not been back since I left."
