Lyon and former Newcastle defender Jean Alain Boumsong admits he was influential in David Ngog's move to Liverpool in the summer.

"When David talked to me about Liverpool, I first wanted to know whether he had spoken with Rafa Benitez and whether he wanted him," said Boumsong.

"Then I told him that Benitez is a great coach. He gives promising youngsters opportunities and if you work hard, you will get your chance."

The French defender added: "David will have to get more power in his game to compete in this league, but he is still young and has plenty of areas to improve in.

"However, when he sees Steven Gerrard diving into tackles and Jamie Carragher clattering him in training, he will soon wake up."
