Bolton's Taylor insists he wasn't taunting Portsmouth fans

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Matty Taylor insists he wasn't winding up his former Portsmouth fans with his goal celebrations on Saturday.

Taylor told The News: "I don't want to see the football club (Pompey) suffer but ultimately I have got to look out for number one and he's at Bolton.

"I hope Portsmouth get out of trouble, though. They have signed a lot of players and it might take time to gel - sometimes it can take time for that amount of players who come in.

"I'll keep my fingers crossed for them - just so long as it is not at our expense."

It's the second time Taylor has netted against his former club and the first at Fratton Park since leaving in January 2008.

The 27-year-old clearly retains an affection for the Blues, who he helped lead out of the Championship and then retain their Premier League spot for many seasons afterwards.

And he was keen to stress the goal celebration he produced was not directed at the fans he left behind.

He added: "The celebrations were nothing to do with the crowd, I just want to win football matches. I would like to think they don't have a problem with me because I don't have a problem with them.

"The fact it was against Portsmouth doesn't make it any sweeter, that celebration could have been against anyone to be honest. The main thing was to win the game and it's emotional because we haven't won for a long time.

"We haven't started the season particularly well, so the reaction would have been the same no matter who we were playing against. I don't think we played particularly well but I'd take another 10 or 12 wins like that before the end of the season, no problems at all.

"We hadn't won away for nine-and-a-half months, which is far too long for us, so it was a massive win."
