Bolton's Muamba plays down Everton heroics

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba shrugged off his heroics in their 3-2 win over Everton.

Dan Gosling had embarked on a swift counter-attack and looked destined to put Everton into a late lead, up until the midfielder's crucial last-ditch tackle inside his own penalty area.

Muamba told the club's website: "I just tried to do the job for the team. In my position I have to be aware of what players are around me. At one point he (Gosling) was two yards ahead of me and I knew that if I didn't time my tackle right then I would probably have been sent-off.

"It's all about knowing when and when not to try and make a tackle, and I think that was perfect timing and I won the ball off him."

Manager Gary Megson also hailed Muamba's endeavour in making the vital challenge, saying: "At 2-2 there was an occasion when we were trying to win the game and in doing so, we nearly lost it. Everton had a break of four on two players, and Fabrice did fantastically well to get back and take the ball off Gosling's toes."
