Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson was thwarted in his bid for Middlesbrough midfielder Gary O'Neil last week.

The People says Megson tried to sign O'Neil before the window shut - but found out he was banned from taking him by FIFA.

O'Neil had played for Portsmouth this season before he went to Boro and that meant he was a definite non-starter under the 'three clubs in one season' rule.
