The 28-year old midfielder, who has played 25 times for the USA national team, sustained yet another knee injury when attempting to make a comeback for the Trotters’ U21s last week.

Holden had been out since last summer after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while representing America at the CONCACAF Gold Cup and was hoping to get through a full reserves outing with Bolton.

However, he went to ground in a tackle and was left clutching his knee before limping off less than 30 minutes into the match against Everton’s U21s.

Bolton have now confirmed that the former Houston Dynamo star has undergone surgery on the problem area and will now be out of action at least until the end of the year.
