Bolton's Holden backs banned Colorado Rapids midfielder Mullan

Bolton Wanderers star Stuart Holden has jumped to the defence of suspended Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan.

The USA international, who is out injured with a broken leg caused by a tackle by Manchester United's Jonny Evans back on March 19, feels that the 10-macth sanction imposed on Mullan is far too hefty.

Mullan broke the leg of Seattle Sounders winger Steve Zakuani in two places last Friday with a very rash challenge and Holden feels that it was very out of character by his former Houston Dynamo teammate.

"Brian is a great player who plays very hard, but he's not a dirty player," Holden said.

"I know that he never intended to cause the injury and that he feels bad about the whole situation."
