Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson is chasing Newcastle United striker Alan Smith.

The News of the World says Megson has had the former England international watched several times this season and is preparing a bid of around £2million when the transfer window opens in January.

Though Smith, 28, started his career as a striker, he has dropped deeper into the centre of midfield in recent years. He has starred in that position since Newcastle were relegated.

Everton manager David Moyes is also a long-time admirer of Smith's passion and commitment and is closely monitoring the situation at St James' Park.
