Bolton Wanderers have failed with a £4 million offer for Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill.

Wanderers manager Gary Megson is believed to have tabled the bid to sign Cahill earlier in the week, says the Manchester Evening News.

But the midlands club turned down the offer - as they had previously from local rivals Birmingham.
