Bolton boss Megson happy to see action against Atletico Madrid

Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson is happy to see Atletico Madrid cop tough sanctions from UEFA this week.

The Spanish club is waiting to discover whether UEFA may have a rethink on their initial ruling that they must play their next two Champions League matches away from the capital and will be fined £120,000 for racial abuse and off-the-field trouble in their match against Marseille.

Megson's side beat Atletico over two legs in the UEFA Cup last season, and he was not surprised to hear of the punishment.

"No, not from our own experiences," he said. "It wasn't a great surprise to see what sanctions they've had placed upon them.

"I don't know if I'm being naive or seeing things through rose-coloured glasses, but I've not really experienced anything like that in this country. But over in Madrid it definitely happened - and it needs to be stopped.

"All that kind of stuff has no place in football."

Megson also backed the Football Association's stance not to let England play next year's proposed friendly against Spain at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium, where England players were racially abused in 2004.

"If that stops it then it's worthwhile," he said.
