Bolton boss Coyle slams transfer windows system

Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle wants the transfer windows system scrapped.

Unsurprisingly, Coyle isn’t a fan.

“I never believed we needed it. I never saw anything wrong in the old system,” he said, looking back to the days when clubs were only prevented from signing new players a few weeks before the end of each season.

“I think it has cost clubs financially because when clubs pick up injuries and suspensions in the transfer window, you end up top heavy with players, and maybe ones who have been put in there just for the numbers as opposed to the right quality for you football club.

“Whereas in the old system if you picked up an injury, you’d look at the marketplace and buy a player if and when he was available. I didn’t see anything wrong in that.

“Football is the same as any other business, globally. We follow the same rules, and it affects everyone.

“Some clubs looked at it like ourselves and said ‘is a player available, what’s he worth, and will they have to pay double?’

“I’m from the old school anyway. If you want to go and buy a player, go and buy him, whether it was February or whatever. But the powers that be, if truth were told, have caused more problems than anything else.”
