Bolton boss Coyle confident convincing Middlesbrough to part with Williams

Bolton Wanderers are confident prising defender Rhys Williams away from Middlesbrough.

The Bolton News says Coyle will soon firm up his interest in Australia international Williams, who is available at around £2.5m.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray has vowed to hold on to the highly-rated 22-year-old, who he sees as a key figure in guiding the club out of the Championship this season.

But he still possesses a top heavy squad and has been told by chairman Steve Gibson he must trim his wage bill further before being able to put his own stamp on the side he inherited from Gordon Strachan.

Williams is not one of the top earners - but Mowbray's resolve will be tested when Wanderers push forward a bid, believed to be around £2.25m.
