Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle admits Gary Cahill's World Cup hopes have been dashed.
Cahill was released from hospital on Monday after developing a blood clot in his left arm, but the medication used to treat his condition means he will almost certainly miss the rest of the season and be denied a chance of making Fabio Capello's England squad.
"I don't think the World Cup was a faint hope," said Coyle. "For me, he'd have been in the squad.
"It looks as though that chance will pass him by, but it will come again."
Coyle called on his players to rally round in Cahill's absence.
He said: "The players wear that shirt with pride and will give everything they can. I am sure this group will do all in their power to win points for Bolton."
