Bolton Wanderers are launching a £1.5 million bid for Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg.

The Mirror says the Swede is ready to quit Villa and is clear to talk to foreign sides, including Italy's Juventus, about a free move at the end of the season.

However Bolton, with cash to burn after selling Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea, have now approached Villa to speak to the defender, 30.
