Boca Juniors excited about US U17 call-up Sonora

Joel Sonora is being tipped for big things by the Boca Juniors academy.

The promising midfielder was called up to Richie Williams' USA U17 squad as the only player outside US Soccer's U17 residency and there is a lot of buzz about the son of three-time MLS All-Star Diego Sonora.

"He is a player with excellent technique and great projection," Boca Juniors Academy coordinator Jose Maello told FutbolMLS.com.

"[He] reads the game very well and has the ability to make quick decisions. He's a kid who can play as a No. 10 or as a holding mid."

He added: "I took him to Qatar (for the Al-Kass Youth Cup) and did very well, sometimes as a starter, others coming in as a sub.

"When he played Inter, he showed he is a player who can create attacking options, assists his teammates and is always dangerous near the box."

Sonora is part of the USA U17 squad which kicks off their CONCACAF U17 Championship on Sunday against Haiti before facing Guatemala next Thursday to close out their group stage in Panama ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup in October this year.
