Boateng: Guardiola, Ferdinand, Ronaldo all had my back, but…

Kevin-Prince Boateng says efforts over the past few years to eliminate racism have fallen short.

The Ghanaian took a stand against racism when he walked off the pitch while playing for AC Milan against Pro Patria in January 2013 when teammates Urby Emanuelson, M'Baye Niang and Sulley Muntari had allegedly been racially abused.

At the time, many big-name stars in the football world, like Pep Guardiola, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo, backed Boateng's protest but the 29-year-old attacker, these days playing with Las Palmas in Spain's La Liga, says he has hardly seen the fight continue.

“We should fight harder, stronger," he said in an interview with The Guardian.

“We can't say the work is done.

“Sepp Blatter and Fifa wanted to change something. Pep Guardiola, Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo, everybody got involved; they all got my back. We had to do something.

“Racism goes beyond football, but football gives you the platform [but] then they close [the taskforce] for I-don't-know-what reason. All I know is I read it one day and I was shocked."

Boateng scoffed: “'We achieved what we wanted to achieve.

“I don't know what that is, but we definitely didn't fight racism the way I thought. We had lots of ideas but it didn't change nothing

“ Just saying no to racism on a commercial doesn't do it: it's nice, but you only see it during the Champions League …"
