Blackpool chairman Oyston ready to quit over transfer policy criticism

Karl Oyston is prepared to step down as Blackpool chairman.

Oyston's approach to signing players - he won't pay over the odds and risk building up debt - has resulted in the club missing out on a host of players this summer, with wages a particular tricky issue.

"I won't hit the panic button. It won't happen," Oyston told the Blackpool Gazette. "Fans always want you to sign the biggest and best players.

"But myself and the manager have to work towards something that will benefit us long term and not just for one season.

"Signing players has been the key deficiency (this summer).

"But we can't have players who will pick up their pay packet and disappear at end of season if it doesn't work out.

"We need to assemble a squad for the long-term, not just this season and although I'm angry and frustrated at what's happened in the transfer market this summer, we'll hold our nerve because consequences of not holding our nerve is financial crisis.

"Maybe one or two clubs who went up to the Premier League now wish they'd done that, rather than be too desperate to stay in the league.

"West Brom are a good model for us. They accepted their fate and came back stronger.

"That's not me saying we accept we'll drop down because our aim is not to."
