Blackburn's Bentley has no regrets over England criticism

Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley has no regrets criticising the approach by England to last month's friendly in France.

He told The Sun: "I still challenge anyone to say the French match was a proper competitive game which thrilled the fans.

"I could see what it was like from the substitutes' bench and when I came on it felt like everyone was going through the motions on both sides. I was a bit angry about it because you want matches to matter.

"I got loads of texts from mates afterwards telling me how dull it was and saying they could hardly be bothered to sit through it. But it doesn't mean I don't love being involved with England. Far from it, it's one of the biggest buzzes in football.

"But I just like a laugh and want to do my job as well as I can. I don't take it too seriously. We are not fighting in Iraq, it's football, it's a game to enjoy. If people think I've got too much to say for myself that's up to them - I won't stop though. When I'm praised or hammered I take it all with a pinch of salt. I've got no regrets.

"Liverpool will be a big game for us and a chance for everyone at Blackburn, not only me, to show what we are about. Obviously I want to do well but not because there have been stories linking me with Liverpool. You want to prove you can perform against the best."
