Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince has questioned the wisdom of Giovanni Trapattoni in playing Steven Reid for the Republic of Ireland last week.
"Like always when players go on international duty, you have to face the circumstances, whether they are good or bad when they come back," said Ince, who was speaking after Rovers' goalless draw with Bolton on Saturday.
"Everybody wants to play for their country and Reidy has been doing exceptionally well for Ireland.
"I just think you have to be careful with Reidy because he is not one who can play two games in such a close time.
"He came back and he's had problems with his knees and now he's out for the season."
Meanwhile, Ince dismissed suggestions that Reid - who jetted out to Colorado last week to have surgery under renowned knee specialist Richard Steadman - will play again this season.
"No, not at all. It is what it is. He is out for the rest of the season," the former Manchester United midfielder added.
