Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes admits a deal is on for South African trialist Quinton Fortune.
Hughes said: "He came over with us. We were made aware that he was available, and it was a good opportunity for us to have a look.
"We need to see if his fitness levels are up to the right standard, because he hasn't played a great deal of football. Then we can make a more qualified decision on him."
Hughes adds, however, that early impressions have been favourable - and there could be a possibility of a contract.
He said: "He has had problems with injuries and he has just had another operation but he has come back from that. He looks fit and well, and there is no doubt about his pedigree.
"He has played at top clubs and made an impression at all of them. If he is fit and well and we think he can add to what we've got it doesn't take a lot of sense to see it is something we can do."
