Birmingham secure ex-Preston, Leeds, Swindon keeper Lucas

Birmingham City have added a third goalkeeper to their squad by signing 34-year old David Lucas.

The former Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Swindon Town gloveman has penned a one-year deal with the Blues, joining as a free agent after finishing with Rochdale recently.

Birmingham boss Lee Clark already has Colin Doyle and Jack Butland at his disposal but feels it is vital to have three quality keepers vying for the number one position.

"I'm delighted to welcome David to the club and he will now compete with Jack and Colin for the No.1 spot," Clark told the club's official website.

"It's very important for us to always have three senior goalkeepers to call upon because, for example, we could find ourselves without Jack Butland for the Capital One Cup tie against Barnet (on August 14) due to international duty."
