Birmingham co-owners ready to quit after fans' rage

Birmingham City co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan both threatened to quit after the club suffered relegation yesterday.

Chairman Gold, joint president Sullivan and other board members were subjected to foul-mouthed abuse by fans after Brum went down despite a 4-1 home win over Blackburn.

Gold revealed: "As far as I am concerned, this has been a near-death experience.

"Never, never in my whole time at this football club have I witnessed fans being so terribly abusive. As far as those in front of the directors' box are concerned, you could see the hatred in their eyes and in their faces.

"We had two children with us, David Sullivan's sons Dave junior - who was reduced to tears - and Jack. It was a disgusting display. We had to get the children out of the way. We feared for their safety at one point.

"Was it six people, was it 100, do they represent thousands or even a majority of the crowd? That's what I need to discover. If they turn out to be in the majority, then I will be left with no alternative but to resign as chairman."

Sullivan stormed: "Those people don't know anything about business and they know nothing about football.

"I've had enough. I don't want to be here next season. All I can say to David Gold is 'Please buy me out, mate'. There are half a dozen clubs in this country who would welcome me with open arms.

"I will listen to some of the local radio phone-ins and study any polls run by newspapers. Perhaps that will provide a more true picture of how we stand. I don't mind chants of 'Sack the board' when we are slipping out of the Premier League. Paying customers are entitled to vent their frustration and I might even have joined in if I wasn't a member of the board.

"I feel dreadful. This was a sad attack, and it does get to you however thick you believe your skin might be. The board have made mistakes this season and so have the players and management.

"One major slip-up was allowing all the uncertainty to drag on and on over a potential takeover. But one group, the fans, had not committed a single error before this afternoon. It's a great, great shame that we end up like this."
