Birmingham boss wants Ferguson to continue Scotland exile

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish wants Barry Ferguson to follow Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes' example and continue his international exile. Following Craig Levein's appointment to the role of Scotland boss, speculation has been rife that the new man in charge would hand in-form Ferguson a recall, reports the Birmingham Mail.

McLeish is hoping that his midfield general remains is not tempted to return to action for Scotland.

McLeish has been delighted with Ferguson's contribution alongside Lee Bowyer this season and considers the 31-year-old to be playing at his peak.

However, the Blues boss understands that the final decision will ultimately come down to whether the ex-Blackburn man still has the ambition to turn out for his country again.

"Barry understands the rigours and demands of this league," said McLeish, who previously managed Ferguson for Rangers and Scotland.

"It's up to him. It's his decision, but he knows it will be tough to combine international and Premier League football - especially at his age. He's playing at his peak.

"I can't make Barry's decision for him but I think he only has to look at examples like Paul Scholes who has now, I believe, been offered another contract by Sir Alex at the age of 35.

"Ferguson could probably take the lead from examples like that, but that's up to him."
