Birmingham boss McLeish stands-by his Blues squad

Birmingham lost at home to fellow strugglers West Bromwich Albion at the weekend leaving them in the drop zone. The Blues were without key personnel in Craig Gardner and midfield talisman Barry Ferguson.

But boss Alex McLeish has dismissed talk that the players he drafted in to replace them were not up to the task.

"The players that have been first choice for quite some time, you never like to lose them," he told Sky Sports News.

"But I don't for one minute think that the guys who came in to replace them are not good enough.

"You just can't legislate for the goals that we lost on the weekend.

"We were sloppy all over the pitch and it's not just about the back four, or back five, although the third goal should have been defended better.

"Scharner getting a free header and our back post man David Bentley coming off the post - so these are basics that have nothing to do with missing Ferguson and Gardner."

But McLeish has every confidence that his team will deal with the increased demands their perilous position brings.

He added: "The pressure will intensify a wee bit and we will have to deal with it, and we have dealt quite well with it in the past."
