Birmingham boss Eck demands Hleb get more involved

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish is calling for Alex Hleb to take more responsibility in games after their draw with West Ham United.

It was only after going 2-0 down that his side came to life and Hleb failed to make an the impact expected of someone who has played for Arsenal and Barcelona.

McLeish said: "We never had that cutting edge until we went two goals down and I had to change the formation twice in the game to try and get something from it.

"I changed it at half time thinking it might surprise West Ham but they scored a quick goal and that totally messes up your game plan.

"We had to re-write it again and thankfully the guy's resilience and steel showed through again.

"We played more direct again at the end and we could have won it.

"Too much in the first half was too slow, too pedestrian and we are not technical enough to penetrate teams when we play in that manner."

McLeish added: "We never really got Hleb into the game.

"He is a player who has got to impose himself on the game as well. He is a big player, big things are expected of him.

"We just couldn't get him into the game and that is why we had to completely change the tactics."
