Birchall delighted with St Mirren switch

Former Coventry City midfielder Chris Birchall is delighted with his move to St Mirren.

The 23-year-old is the latest in a long line of Trinidad & Tobago stars to ply their trade in Scotland with Falkirk's Russell Latapy and Marvin Andrews, now with Raith Rovers, the most notable.

Jason Scotland, Collin Samuel, Brent Sancho and Kelvin Jack also enjoyed spells in Scotland. And Burchill was in no doubt over what was the right thing to do after phoning a few friends.

He said: "A few of my team-mates who are involved with Trinidad played in the SPL and the First Division and they told me to come up and enjoy my football.

"The perception of the Scottish league down in England is not the right one. People don't really understand it. I just wanted to come and enjoy playing and when I spoke to them they told me to go for it and it's nice to be here. There is nothing worse than not being involved when you are fully fit and I don't want my fitness to go down."

Birchall has already found a familiar face in the Love Street dressing room. He said: "I played against Will Haining a few times when I was at Port Vale. Even he said to me that the perception of the game in England is different to what it is actually like and that I'd enjoy it up here."
