Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce says they only stayed up thanks to Jermain Defoe's goals.
Defoe has scored 15 goals in 32 league appearances this season and his Allardyce was quick to hail his contribution.
Asked whether Sunderland could have stayed up without Defoe and his goals, he said: "No, I don't think so.
"But at the other end we couldn't have done it without letting the goals chipping in and Vito Mannone again today, the back four were solid, developing into a side that is difficult to break down."
