Big plans for DC United after Indonesian magnate Thohir takes over

Indonesian media and entertainment magnate Erick Thohir has officially signed on as co-owner of MLS club DC United.

The Washington outfit, who were owned by Will Chang's DC United Holdings, now have Thohir and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Jason Levien on board and there are big plans ahead to take things globally.

"It's very important to build a strong team in the first two years," Thohir said.

"After you have this strong team, then you advertise the team to other countries through new media, tours, building a soccer academy, coaching clinics, then everything else.

"If you also do well on that side, then many fans will fly to DC and become suporters also.

"That's what you see with Manchester United. Many Japanese supporters come and many Chinese supporters come [to watch Man. United]."

Chang, who has stayed on to become a minority shareholder, was delighted to welcome Thohir and Levien on board at DC.

"I'm proud to introduce Erick and Jason as my partners. I believe that I've found the perfect people to team with, and I am excited about the future of DC United," said Chang.
