German legend Olivier Bierhoff has told Roy Hodgson to forget about Manchester United veteran Rio Ferdinand and back England's best youngsters.

Hodgson has picked an older, more experienced squad to face San Marino and Montenegro.

But Bierhoff, the German team's general manager, said: "Older players didn't guarantee us a certain level, so we were forced to invest in young players.

''When you do that, it helps to give them courage and now we have a lot more talented players."
