Bertrand attributes England form to Southampton stay

Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand has credited his national form to his decision of staying with the Saints.

The 26-year-old impressed for the Three Lions in their 2-0 defeat against Spain on Friday and in the absence of injured Luke Shaw, he has an ideal opportunity to cement a place in Roy Hodgson's side ahead of Euro2016.

Bertrand made his loan move from Chelsea permanent in February this year and now he is a regular in Ronald Koeman's side.

He said: "It has been massive. That's one thing I said at the start. I just needed a foundation of consistent football and that's what I went looking for.

"In Southampton as a club, with Ronald Koeman as the manager, I found that.

"He really lets me express myself and play my game, put my stamp on games and not just participate.

"Obviously certain things have happened and you can't take anything for granted, really. You need to still work, nothing is a given.

"I just want to continue and concentrate on each game, each friendly game.

"We've got big tests coming again. It is important that we keep consistent as a team, in my performances too."
