Former Newcastle United midfielder Olivier Bernard says they've gaffed allowing Bafetimbi Gomis to join Swansea City.
The 28-year-old was offered to the Magpies for nothing after running down his contract at Lyon.
Bernard told the Evening Chronicle: "I think we have missed out - especially on a free transfer. He is one of the finest target men in the French market.
"He can hold the ball up well and physically he can battle with the best of them, and on top of that he is a good finisher.
"It would have given Newcastle's frontline real presence.
"Newcastle have lacked that for a while in some ways, since Andy Carroll left, although Gomis is a lot more mobile than Carroll."
He added: "Gomis was keen on Newcastle.
"He came to the city to watch a game and have a look round. He liked it. Yet at 28 this is his last big move and any footballer knows that is important.
"He still has something to offer and that is why I think Newcastle are missing out."
