Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is playing for his Old Trafford future tonight against Schalke. The Manchester Evening News says it is likely that the back-up strike duo of Berbatov and Michael Owen will lead the attack against Schalke.
Since United failed in their Invincible bid 18 matches ago, Berbatov has started only four games and has added only two goals to his tally since the end of January.
The Bulgarian is under contract until 2012 and United have the option of extending the deal for an extra 12 months after that. But that piece of business has not yet been done and Bayern Munich have been monitoring the situation.
Loanees Danny Welbeck and Kiko Macheda are due back next season after spells at Sunderland and Sampdoria and this summer could be the last chance for United to recoup some of their massive 2008 outlay on Berbatov.
