Bent accepts he should've netted Wigan winner

Marcus Bent accepts he should've netted a winner for Wigan Athletic in Saturday's draw with Tottenham.

"I know I should have scored, but you win some, you lose some," said a philosophical Bent. "I know it could have been the winner, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

"Normally I'm very critical of myself. I maybe do beat myself up a little too much. So this time I'm going to try and forget about it and take the positives into next week's game.

"I'm obviously disappointed because if I had scored we would have got three points and been a lot safer than we are at the moment. If it had gone in everybody would have been congratulating me on a good goal, but that's football."

At least Wigan's fate is in their hands and they know exactly what they have to do against the Royals, although Bent is already aware of the attention that is likely to build ahead of that game.

"I'd urge you boys (the media) to chill out a little because the more pressure you put on us, the worse it will get," added Bent. "But then look at this performance. Tottenham have won a trophy this year with a team that's full of quality players.

"I think we held our own - we should have won it - but we'll take it into next week's game and hopefully beat Reading.

"We know what we have do. We have to go and win, or we sit where we are and hope everyone loses, but that's not the way.

"At the moment we're buzzing, we're encouraging one another in the right way, because although there are a lot of tired legs now it's the end of the season, we're still working hard."
