Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has held talks with Rafa Benitez regarding the managerial role at St James' Park.
The Spaniard guided the relegated Magpies to a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday after he met with Ashley to speak about his future on Tyneside.
Benitez signed a three-year deal when he replaced Steve McClaren in March but it is understood there is an early release clause in the contract.
With Newcastle suffering relegation to the Championship, it is felt that the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss will walk this summer but the discussions with Ashley have him reportedly considering his position, according to Sky Sports.
"Hopefully this week we will start analysing what is going on and what will be the future of Newcastle United and my future," said Benitez.
"I don't know what he [Ashley] will do, but I have an appointment with Lee Charnley so I will talk to him. If they want both to talk with me it will be fine, no problem."
Benitez added: "My heart is saying yes - great club, great city and opportunity - but you have to use your brain too.
"I said before that I was expecting a great atmosphere, but it has been amazing. Even more positive than I was expecting.
"We still have to sit down and talk. I want the best for Newcastle United and the best for me. That's simple."
