Benitez determined to land Man Utd's Heinze

The Times says Heinze, who has lost his first-team place at Old Trafford to Patrice Evra, has attracted interest from Real Madrid, Juventus and Villarreal, but Benitez wants to complete a rare transfer between the NorthWest clubs by persuading the unsettled Argentina player to make the short move from one end of the East Lancs Road to the other.

Several players, including Paul Ince, have appeared for Liverpool and United, but not since Phil Chisnall left Old Trafford for Anfield in 1964, after helping United to beat Leicester City in the 1963 FA Cup Final, has a direct transfer taken place between the clubs.

Buoyed by the imminent arrival of Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres, who has verbally agreed a long-term £90,000-a-week deal, Benitez is confident that he can seal Heinze's signature for about £4 million - £2.9 million less than United paid for the 29-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain in June 2004.
