Benitez admits Newcastle missed out on EFL Cup chance

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez admits his side missed a golden opportunity in their EFL Cup quarter-final with Hull City.

The Magpies were eliminated from the league cup competition 3-1 on penalties after their meeting with the Tigers at the KCOM Stadium finished 1-1 after extra-time.

Newcastle had the advantage of an extra man for the final 30 minutes after Dieumerci Mbokani was sent off in the 88th minute but were unable to make the most of their extra personnel.

Asked by Sky Sports if it was an opportunity missed, Benitez said: "Clearly.

"The way we played, the situation we had, against 10 players, and 1-0 up, we have to manage better.

"I am really pleased with the performance and the attitude for a long time, but disappointed because we didn't manage the situation properly with the advantage."

He added: "The way we played away at a Premier League team means we are strong enough to manage the situation, but we need experience to ensure we do it in the right way.

"It's something you can learn from in situations like this and you will improve from these kinds of goals, mistakes and penalties that give you something to learn."

Mo Diame scored first for Newcastle in the 98th minute, against his former club, only for Robert Snodgrass to equalise seconds later before the Tyneside club flopped in the shootout.
