David Beckham has pleaded is urging Manchester United supporters to back Wayne Rooney following his dramatic U-turn. Fans were left outraged when the England striker said he wanted to leave United before changing his mind and then signing a new five-year contract.
He said: "Wayne Rooney is a great talent wherever he plays - he's always going to be a great player.
"But, as a Manchester United fan myself, the Manchester United supporters should be happy and it can be put to bed."
He added: "I'm not surprised he's staying at Manchester United because they're the biggest club in the world.
"And he's got the best manager that will look after him at all times.
"They're the best fans in the world so at the end of the day it's an easy decision."
LA Galaxy star Beckham left United seven years ago after boss Sir Alex Ferguson grew tired of his star player's celebrity lifestyle which is believed to have strained the pair's relationship.
But the 35-year-old has dismissed any comparisons between his Old Trafford departure and the furore surrounding Rooney.
He said: "My situation was totally different.
"If I had the chance to stay at Manchester United I would have.
"I've always had a good relationship with the manager - everyone has their ups and downs and everybody knew about those because they were more publicised than anything else."
