Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has hit out at critics of his form with Italy.
"When I play for the Nazionale it's always like this," he snapped. "Everyone is in great shape except me. I am described as slow, clumsy and off form."
He only scored in one game during the 2006 World Cup and could well be dropped for the younger Alberto Gilardino in tonight's match against the United States.
"I am 32 and do not feel old. In fact, I am in my prime after scoring 61 goals in two years in Germany. I don't think that's a record to be sniffed at.
"In any case, the important thing is to be in this squad. I hope to start the game, but if I don't then I will cheer on my replacement.
"We all have fun together and that is important when going for victory."
