Bayern Munich star Xabi: I never got the chance to say goodbye to Liverpool fans

Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso has expressed his regret at the manner of his departure from Liverpool.

Alonso was unceremoniously sold to Real Madrid by former Reds manager Rafa Benitez back in 2009 and the decision was certainly not a popular one among the fans.

Despite his exit, Alonso has maintained a strong bond with the Liverpool supporters and the midfielder made a return to Anfield to make an appearance in the All-Star Charity game held on Sunday.

Upon his return, the Spaniard has stated that he felt at home at Anfield and expressed his regret at not being able to bid a proper farewell to the fans in 2009.

Alonso said: "When I left, I didn't have the chance to say a proper goodbye. Today was a kind of 'hello' to everyone - it was great to be back home. It was a great feeling.

"It brought all the memories back. It felt like I hadn't left for a long time. I was feeling at home. It's always special to be back at Anfield."
