Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal admits he would love the chance to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Van Gaal was one of a select number of coaches interviewed by Manchester United when Ferguson seemed set to leave Old Trafford in 2002.

Now, almost eight years on, the Dutchman is in Manchester intent on exposing the limitations of Ferguson's side.

Asked about his previous flirtation with United, Van Gaal said diplomatically: "It would have been a great honour for me to take over."
