Sebastien Bassong hailed Newcastle United's fans for the atmosphere generated in Monday's 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.

"It was a really, really amazing atmosphere, and I must say thank you to them, because they were unbelievable," the defender told the Evening Chronicle.

"The atmosphere was wonderful - the fans were amazing.

"It's not the same in France.

"I am used to playing in the biggest stadiums in France - and I have seen the biggest derby in France - but St James's Park is really different.

"It's the best stadium I have played in, and that's why I like Newcastle."
