Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick has revealed a home-grown candidate never stood a chance of becoming the new England manager.

The FA appointed experienced Italian Fabio Capello as Steve McClaren's successor earlier in the week and Barwick - who led the recruitment process - has revealed no English candidates had the required credentials.

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, Newcastle's Sam Allardyce and under-21 coach Stuart Pearce were all mentioned as possible candidates for the role.

"I wrote out a template and put it against our current crop of English managers and not one of them ticked all the boxes," Barwick told the News of the World.

"So the reality is we can't find a suitable English candidate at present.

"It has to be our ambition to have an English boss, but we have to be realistic."
